Bellevue-bound commuters on two ST Express bus routes will be detoured at Canyon Park Park & Ride in Bothell starting Friday, Oct. 30, a long-term reroute that could last until 2028.

Sound Transit announced on Monday, Oct. 26, that Routes 535 and 532 will shift to a temporary stop, Bay B, inside the park-and-ride as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) tears down the existing pedestrian bridge over I-405.

The demolition clears the way for a new inline Stride Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station with direct freeway access ramps.

The southbound flyer stop on I-405, known as Bay 4, will close permanently. Riders heading toward Bellevue should board at Temp Bay B instead.

Sound Transit said the new station and replacement bridge will open "later this decade." Community Transit's advisory put the timeline at 2028.

Two weekend highway closures ahead

The bridge removal also triggers two full weekend closures of I-405 lanes near Canyon Park:

  • Friday, Oct. 30, at 10 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, at 4 a.m.: All southbound I-405 lanes close from State Route 522 to SR 527 in Bothell. Route 535 will be detoured.
  • Friday, Nov. 6, at 11 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 9, at 5 a.m.: All northbound I-405 lanes close over the same stretch. Route 535 will again be detoured, and Canyon Park Park & Ride will shut down entirely. No bus service or parking will be available inside the facility.

During the Nov. 6 weekend closure, all routes that normally serve the park-and-ride will stop on 20th Ave. SE between 214th St. SE and 220th St. SE. That temporary stop is a 15-minute walk from the park-and-ride, and no parking is available nearby.

Community Transit advised all riders to arrive at least five minutes early, since buses cannot wait during construction.

Pedestrian bridge gone until 2028

Once the bridge closes permanently at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, pedestrians who need to cross I-405 at Canyon Park have two options, according to Community Transit. During bus service hours, riders can take Routes 106 and 120 from Canyon Park and exit at Bothell Way and 228th St. SE.

Those routes run roughly every 20 to 30 minutes. After hours, the construction contractor will provide a shuttle service through Uber; pedestrians can scan a QR code posted at the site.

Why it matters for Bellevue riders

The construction is part of WSDOT's I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project, which spans 4.5 miles of the corridor in Bothell. WSDOT, Sound Transit and contractor Skanska USA Inc. are building three new inline Stride stations and direct-access ramps to the express toll lane system.

Savanna Steele of Sound Transit's government and community relations team told the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce's Transportation Committee on Oct. 1 that the Stride S2 line will run from Lynnwood to Bellevue, with buses arriving every 10 to 15 minutes, 17 hours a day.

Sound Transit expects trips to be about 20 minutes shorter than current ST Express routes because buses will travel in dual express toll lanes and stop at center-freeway stations.

Prototypes of the battery-electric fleet, including double-decker buses for I-405, arrive in early 2027. Service is expected to start in 2028.

Separately, Sound Transit said Route 535 has already shifted to bay D2 at Lynnwood City Center Station, where bus bay D1 closed Oct. 19 for shelter and charging upgrades to support the future Stride fleet. That work is scheduled to wrap up in February.
