A free federal-government workshop runs Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Newport Way Library in Bellevue, the third in a four-part civics series ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

The Civics 101 series for adults is presented by the Office of the Washington Secretary of State. All four sessions are free, require no registration and include refreshments.

The federal government session runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Newport Way Library, 14250 SE Newport Way. According to the Secretary of State's event listing, the workshop covers the separation of powers among the three branches, values in the founding documents and constitutional provisions around citizenship and voting rights.

The series wraps up with Civics Trivia Night on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the same location. Participants can win prizes. According to the King County Library System, questions will draw from topics covered in earlier workshops, but prior attendance is not required.

Two sessions have already taken place. A Sept. 15 workshop covered local government in Bellevue, including city and county councils, advisory boards and commissions. A Sept. 22 session focused on state government and how bills become law, featuring materials from Teach with TVW, a free resource from Washington's public affairs television network.

The workshops land about five weeks before the Nov. 3 general election. Newport Way Library doubles as an official King County ballot drop box location, according to the county voters' pamphlet. The Secretary of State's Civic Engagement Program held nine similar workshops across Washington in the prior year, partnering with libraries, community organizations and Department of Corrections reentry centers.
