Nearly 300 workers at Bungie's Downtown Bellevue headquarters will lose their jobs by July 9

The Sony-owned game studio filed a WARN notice with the Washington State Employment Security Department confirming 292 permanent layoffs.

The cuts hit artists, engineers, producers, designers, technical animators, and audio leads at Bungie's office at 550 106th Ave NE, Suite 207. None of the affected workers are represented by a union. All will receive a combined 60 days of advance notice and severance pay, as required under the WARN Act, according to the filing.

This is Bungie's largest single layoff since Sony acquired the studio for $3.6 billion in 2022. The company previously cut roughly 100 jobs in October 2023 and another 220 in July 2024.

Combined, Bungie has eliminated more than 600 positions across three rounds. The studio once employed more than 1,400 people and now likely has roughly 500 staff remaining.

The layoffs follow the end of Destiny 2's live-service run. The game received its final content update on Tuesday, June 9. Bungie acknowledged the game "fell short of expectations these past several years" in a statement posted to Bluesky on Thursday, June 25.

Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony's Studio Business Group, said in an internal email published the same day that the decision affected "most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members," along with Sony Interactive Entertainment staff who support Bungie's operations.

Hulst said the reduction followed months of review with Bungie leadership and that multiple alternatives were explored before the cuts were finalized.

Former Bungie cinematics director John Ebenger confirmed on Bluesky that the studio's entire cinematic department was eliminated. Bungie studio head Justin Truman also stepped down, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported.

Sony has taken $700 million in impairment losses against the Bungie acquisition, according to Forbes.

Hulst said Marathon, Bungie's multiplayer shooter that launched its first two seasons, remains part of Sony's portfolio. Bungie's own statement referenced "future projects still in early incubation" without specifying timelines.

The separation date of July 9 falls six days before the four-year anniversary of the Sony acquisition's close on July 15, 2022.
