Bellevue drivers who use I-405 between Coal Creek Parkway Southeast and I-90 will lose all northbound lanes Wednesday night as the Washington State Department of Transportation continues sign installation for the $705 million Renton-to-Bellevue widening project.

The northbound closure runs from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, to 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13. During that window, the Coal Creek Parkway Southeast on-ramp, the 112th Avenue Southeast on-ramp and the northbound I-405 off-ramp to I-90 (Exit 11) will all be shut.

All lanes reopen by 4:30 a.m.

A southbound closure between Southeast Eighth Street and Coal Creek Parkway Southeast ran from 11:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11. That closure also shut the southbound I-405 off-ramps to eastbound and westbound I-90 at Exit 11, the Southeast Eighth Street on-ramp, the Northeast Sixth Street HOV on-ramp and the Northeast Eighth Street/Northeast Fourth Street on-ramp, according to MyNorthwest.

WSDOT has posted signed detour maps for both closures on its project page.

The closures follow a 52-hour full northbound shutdown that ended the morning of Monday, Aug. 10, when crews replaced pavement between Renton and Coal Creek Parkway, as we reported Aug. 4.

What the project adds

The I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project adds one lane in each direction between SR 167 in Renton and Northeast Sixth Street in Bellevue. The existing HOV lane will combine with the new lane to create a dual express toll lane system connecting to the existing ETL corridor between Bellevue and Lynnwood, ultimately forming a 40-mile tolled network. The project also supports Sound Transit's planned I-405 Bus Rapid Transit line between Lynnwood and Tukwila. Construction began in 2015 and is scheduled to wrap up in 2027.

More closures ahead this weekend

WSDOT also announced that up to two lanes of southbound I-405 will close between SR 181 and I-5 from 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, to 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17. The southbound I-405 HOV ramp to northbound I-5 will close during that period as well. That stretch runs through Tukwila, but WSDOT warned travelers heading to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport should expect delays.
