Newport Way Library in Bellevue will host a free, four-week Civics 101 workshop series starting Sept. 15.

The opening session focuses on how residents can get involved with city and county government, including Bellevue's council, advisory boards, commissions and committees.

The King County Library System announced the series, which is presented by the Office of the Washington Secretary of State.

It begins weeks after the Secretary of State certified candidates and measures for the November general election on Aug. 21.

All four sessions run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Newport Way Library, 14250 SE Newport Way. No registration is required. Refreshments will be provided.

The Sept. 22 session turns to state government, explaining how bills become law and how residents can participate in the legislative process. That session will feature materials from Teach with TVW, a civics education resource.

On Sept. 29, the workshop explores the federal government, covering the three branches, founding documents and constitutional provisions around citizenship and voting rights.

The series wraps up with a Civics Trivia Night on Oct. 6, complete with prizes. Attendees do not need to have attended earlier sessions to join.

KCLS described the workshops as interactive and non-partisan, encouraging attendees to bring questions.

The series is part of the Secretary of State's Civic Engagement Program, which has held nine workshops statewide in collaboration with libraries, community organizations and Department of Corrections reentry centers. The program aims to ensure all Washingtonians can access and participate in civic discourse.

KCLS also offers citizenship test preparation classes, news in multiple languages and legal research resources at Newport Way Library and other branches.
