The Seattle Seahawks have new owners.
NFL owners voted unanimously Wednesday, Aug. 26, to approve the record $9.612 billion sale of the franchise to Vinod Khosla and his family, NW Asian Weekly reported.
The vote, held at a special owners meeting in Atlanta, finalizes a deal first announced July 11 and marks the largest price ever paid for an NFL team in a change of ownership.
"The task ahead is actually pretty simple," Vinod Khosla said at a press conference following the vote. "Keep the winning streak alive. Get another Super Bowl."
Neeru Khosla will serve as controlling owner. Son Neal Khosla is expected to hold a major role in the organization. Daughter Nina Khosla also attended the Atlanta meeting.
The family must divest its ownership stake in the San Francisco 49ers as part of the deal. Vinod Khosla purchased 3.1% of the 49ers in 2025 as a minority owner. NFL rules prohibit owning stakes in multiple franchises.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell congratulated the family on their "great timing," noting the Seahawks are coming off their second Super Bowl victory in franchise history. He said the Khoslas' prior 49ers ownership made the transaction "particularly attractive" to other owners.
The sale fulfills the wishes of late owner Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who died in October 2018. Allen directed that his assets be sold with proceeds going to philanthropy. His sister, Jody Allen, operated the team in the years since his death.
No major organizational changes are expected under the new ownership, The Athletic reported.
General manager John Schneider is under contract through 2031. Head coach Mike Macdonald, the third-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl, signed a six-year deal in 2024.
Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, was born in India and moved to the United States in 1976. Neeru Khosla also immigrated from India. They join the Minnesota Vikings' Zygi Wilf and the Jacksonville Jaguars' Shahid Khan as the only principal NFL owners born outside the U.S.
The $9.612 billion price dwarfs recent NFL sales. The Washington Commanders sold to Josh Harris for approximately $6 billion in 2024. The Carolina Panthers went to David Tepper for $2.275 billion in 2018.
The Khosla family's investment group includes private equity firms Sixth Street and Carlyle, according to Sports Illustrated. A timeline for the required 49ers divestiture has not been announced.
