A free Ukrainian cultural festival takes over Bellevue Downtown Park on Saturday, Sept. 12, with live music, traditional food and family activities from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The NorthWest Ukrainian International Festival, organized by the Pacific Ukrainian Society, is marking its 10th year at the park. The group describes the event as the largest Ukrainian cultural celebration on the West Coast, according to the festival's official website. Admission is free, per a MyNorthwest weekend roundup that included the festival.

Since launching in 2016, the festival has grown into what organizers call a tradition for the broader Washington State community, not just Ukrainian families. Its stated mission is to share Ukrainian culture, represent the Northwest's Ukrainian population and strengthen ties between that community and its neighbors.

This year's stage lineup includes choirs, soloists and bands from Northwestern states and Ukraine, along with multicultural guest performances. Attendees can browse vendor booths, sample authentic Ukrainian food and international snacks, and watch a vyshyvanka competition showcasing traditional embroidered clothing.

For families, a Fun Zone offers inflatables, games and a trout fishing pond.

The festival takes place against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. Valeriy Goloborodko, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Seattle, addressed that tension directly in a welcome message posted on the festival website.

"When is it not the right time to share our values, raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle, build bridges with other communities, and pray for protection against evil?" Goloborodko wrote.

The event is supported by the City of Bellevue, sponsors and volunteers, according to the organizers. Parking information is available on the festival's website.
